There are not enough people willing to put their health on the line for what are essentially poverty wages for a family of four or more, to care for and possibly educate other peoples’ children as substitute teachers

Our economy shut down when schools shut down. It became more visible how schools serve as community centers for social services including access to food, to child care, to health services, along with their primary mission of leading students to learn to read, write, solve mathematical problems, investigate like scientists and to become our future citizens.

The last five to ten years have seen a rapid development of online higher education on the Internet

Keywords: equity, educational equity

the growing popularity of the online bachelor’s degree is due to the fact that the online bachelor’s degree in universities is now widely accepted as the equivalent of what can be obtained at any brick and mortar school.

Hopefully, this post will give you a better understanding of who I am as a person outside of being your instructor

Usually on the very first day of college classes, instructors do a “get to know me” activity on syllabus day. And, usually this “get to know me” activity happens in a physical classroom where everyone can see our unmasked faces. Unfortunately, this semester is quite different. Our main mode of instruction will be asynchronous online; our class is broken up into four groups, so the max number of people in class will be around seven people; we’re required to wear masks in the classroom; and we will never have the opportunity to meet as an entire class.

So, how can we circumvent this unprecedented semester and come together–as much as possible–as a class?

Our education system trains us not to work in teams but as individuals to the extent that students compete with each other and start hiding their work as well as marks

Surprisingly when we get into the world of work, one of the traits that is required is team work. People start struggling with working well in teams to the extent that people on the same team start competing against each other to impress their bosses. How much more results can be achieved in an environment where each individual is contributing their strengths, abilities and skills in the team.

As educators, we should be designing learning activities that are hands-on, active, and applied; that provide students with a lot of voice and choice; that allow them to be creative; that foster their critical thinking and problem-solving skills; that let them share, communicate, and collaborate; that provide opportunities for them to tap into their interests and passions; that give them chances to use technology in interesting ways; that connect them in meaningful ways with outside experts, organizations, and local communities; and so on…

All of our students deserve deeper learning opportunities, even during a pandemic.

King For A Day is not something we will be trying again for a few years

I read a few articles on how to help him and took the suggestion from a mom/PHD to crown him king for the day. As king, he would choose what we ate, where we ate, what we wore, etc. It was going to an epic day of fun and laughter. In less than thirty minutes of me crowning him after he woke up in the morning, we were both screaming at each other while Michael laughed at my epic fail. As king, Hobert hard decided he didn’t have to be nice to anyone, he didn’t have to do anything, and the undesirable behavior I was trying to fix was only amplified.

Local school districts are experiencing growing pressure from educational experts, governing authorities and parents to reopen their campuses for the upcoming school year

Getting ready for a new school year is always a challenge, even under normal circumstances. But the challenge this year is beyond unprecedented. It is unimaginable. Administrators, teachers and maintenance staffs are being overwhelmed by the new and still-changing requirements, even as they struggle with difficult personal decisions about exposure and risk.

Not only can I not go on campus for wifi right now, but the entirety of my education lifeline now depends on the internet

Let this be a message to professors. We are trying our best. Sometimes situations make it hard for us to do our best work. I hope professors are able to recognize that and forget this semester.
