I don’t think I have learned to write any better

I know that all of you RPC students like me only have a blog because you have to post your essays on it. But The only reason you d that is so people can correct them. But that is what i have noticed! No one is correcting them. All we do is like or say it is good because we don’t want to take the time to correct the essay. I do this too.

This first post will go over my path towards instructional technology, and goals I have for my first semester in the Instructional Systems Technology graduate certificate program from Indiana University Bloomington

Since the COVID 19 pandemic began in 2020, I saw my students struggle with online learning and the sharp transition in their academic and personal lives. I also saw my colleagues shift to a more virtual work environment, with success and challenge. It made me want to learn more about the ways my students were learning through technology, and hopefully transition to a career in instructional design or educational technology someday. I love working in education, and I want to be able to help people learn and teach better. It has become very clear this past year that online learning isn’t going away, and we need people who can help students and educators use technology effectively to keep folks moving forward with their education.

I knew that I would receive that A by agreeing with and using my teacher’s ideas

This tactic is most commonly used for written assignments, but students must begin voicing their ideas without fear of being “wrong” because one’s ideas do not correlate to their teacher’s. This will also require teachers to get out of the mindset of believing there is a right or wrong answer. Perhaps creating a how-to on formulating one’s idea. I find that the topic of research will also play a part in this. Recognizing bias while researching plays a crucial role in developing one’s ideas.

If only all teachers are equipped with the right knowledge on how to effectively teach, guide, and conduct assessments, the learning environment for each student would be so much better

With the knowledge I gained from this course, I would definitely bear all of what I have learned in heart and mind as I want my future students to experience holistic learning in my classes. I don’t want to commit the same mistakes that my teachers before have unintentionally done; I want to do my best in this career and vocation to make my students love learning. I want them to love learning or take interest in what I teach in hopes that someday they will impart the knowledge I have passed down to them. I aspire to be the teacher that will not make their school life difficult but rather make it bearable and enjoyable so they can maximize their abilities and potentials in my classes.

Instead of beating myself up and blaming the test, the professor, or the course for my performance on an exam, I would own up to my performance and think about how my study habits or techniques might have affected that score

I guess the main takeaway of this story is that there are so many useful academic resources at UCLA, and it is up to us students to take advantage of them as much as possible.

100 Days of A11y

As we’ve learned in Accessibility Principles for ICT, we can apply universal design to fields outside of architecture and web products. CAST, a nonprofit education research and development organization, built up the field of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL is a educational framework of principles, guidelines, and checkpoints that works towards one goal: create expert learners who are:

  • purposeful,
  • motivated,
  • resourceful,
  • knowledgeable,
  • strategic, and
  • goal-directed.

What are the principles of universal design for learning?

There are 3 principles of UDL. Each principle has 3 guidelines. Each guideline has a list of checkpoints.

  1. Provide multiple means of representation: Recognition Networks, the “What” of learning.
    1. Perception:
      1. Offer ways of customizing the display of information.
      2. Offer alternatives for auditory information.
      3. Offer alternatives for visual information.
    2. Language & symbols:
      1. Clarify vocabulary and symbols.
      2. Clarify syntax and structure.
      3. Support decoding of text, mathematical notation, and symbols.
      4. Promote understanding across…
